The 4th meeting of the FLOPRES project has just concluded. On March 31, 2026, we met in Krakow to discuss the foundations of flood protection: spatial planning and adaptation to climate change.
A key point of the program was the public presentation of the FLOPRES expert module. This tool was designed by the project’s lead partner, ESPRIT, to support local governments in making planning decisions. During a hands-on demonstration, participants could see how the technology translates hydrological data into specific guidance for urban planners.
We also presented the results of extensive surveys conducted in 200 municipalities in the Małopolska region. An analysis of the level of knowledge about flash floods and the degree of implementation of adaptation measures gave us a clear picture: municipalities are open to implementing nature-based solutions as part of flood protection.
Meeting participants were also among the first to watch our new educational video. It provides an accessible overview of the nature of flash floods – phenomena that, due to their severity, require a completely different approach than traditional river floods. The meeting concluded with a lively discussion. The comments and observations of practitioners—experts, officials, and planners—were very valuable to us. We thank everyone for their attendance and substantive input, and encourage further collaboration in developing the FLOPRES system.
