On 5 June 2024, the second information meeting of the project “FLOPRES: System for the prediction and prevention of flash floods” was held in Krakow, dedicated to the problem of flash floods on streams: Bibiczanka and Garliczka in the Małopolska region. The meeting was attended by around 40 people, in particular representatives of the Zielonki municipality and the City of Kraków, water management institutions, and residents.
It is the area of the municipality of Zielonki and the northern part of Krakow, due to the turbulent nature of the streams: Bibiczanka and Garliczka, was the second, after the catchment area of the Roztoczanka stream in the municipality of Gródek nad Dunajcem, to be included in a pilot study to test the new early warning system.
The presented FLOPRES early warning system, based on innovative sensors collecting hydro- and meteorological data to forecast the occurrence of a dangerous flood event, received great interest from the event’s participants. With its implementation, the authorities and the local community have high hopes of providing timely warnings to residents in areas at risk. At the same time, the educational value of the project was emphasized, given the need to educate the public on how to respond properly in the event of a flood risk.
We will inform you about further steps soon!
